Do you recall getting into trouble by saying, ‘I can’t’?
Child: I can’t tie my shoe.
Mom: Don’t let me hear you say that again! Can’t ain’t a word!
(for the record: the verbiage lesson should’ve been about ain’t’ not can’t. – but I digress 🙂 )
As a child, we would sit there, dazed and in deep thought. Can’t is a word. I can’t, I can not. What does she mean?
But, we loved our lives; therefore, said nothing.
So, what did our mothers mean when they told us that CAN’T isn’t a word?
Our mothers wasn’t meaning the phrase in the literal sense. The lesson mom was trying to teach, was to be mindful of the words we say. Because..
What you say is what you believe.
This is so true!
In sales, one of the major coaching tactics is speaking your goals.
Knowing your goals is one thing. But, there is magic in writing them down and even speaking them aloud.
Speaking is like the birthing of your thoughts. It’s like moving from the virtual world to the real world.
Yes, it all begins in your mind; however, once we say those things, it brings forth life. And just as you can bring forth life thru speaking, you also can kill.
Have you ever been exercising? You start feeling tired and on the verge of tapping out. As long as you are just thinking it, you keep going. But, as soon as you say something, your body responds accordingly.
If you say, “Come on, I can do it. 5 more minutes.” — You push through.
If you say, “Man I’m done.” –You stop and pack up for the day.
THERE IS POWER IN THE TONGUE
So, with all that being said, why is the title of this post, “Can’t Is A Word”?
Because it is also true that CAN’T IS a word! duh!
The key is what you are saying CAN’T to.
Let’s look at the word.
CAN’T = CAN NOT
Can means “to know,” “to have power to, ”
Not means “in no way”. It is used as an interjection to negate what was said before.
So, what are some things that I will negate power to?
I CAN’T WITH:
This list isn’t long. It’s not because of arrogance. Nor am I superhuman.
Are there some things that I may not be able to do right now. O yes indeed!
But, I CAN if I put my mind and energy into it.
It’s in my choosing to do so, which determines the aptitude of success in any undertaking.
Polishers we all have shortcomings, we all have things to work on. There will be tasks that may seem impossible to complete. However, if they are not on our CAN’T list- we CAN do it! It may require more effort. It may even require help from another. Whatever it takes, we must willing.
So, CANT is a word, but CHOOSE YOUR WORDS WISELY.
